Additional Types of Telecommunications
Apparatus to be Exempted from Licensing
The Government today (March 4) proposed that the use
of certain telecommunications apparatus would be exempted
from licensing so as to further promote the adoption
of advanced wireless technology.
The Telecommunications (Telecommunications Apparatus)
(Exemption from Licensing) (Amendment) Order 2005 was
gazetted today to propose exempting the licensing obligations
of the following additional types of telecommunications
apparatus operating at the specified radio frequency
bands:
- Radio frequency identification (RFID) apparatus: 865-868
MHz and 920-925 MHz;
- Mobile earth stations for mobile-satellite service:
1518-1525 MHz and 1668-1675 MHz;
- Wireless local area network equipment: 5470-5725 MHz;
- Automotive radar systems: 76-77 GHz; and
- Control apparatus for model aircrafts: 35.145-35.225
MHz, 40.66-40.70 MHz, 72.00-72.02 MHz, 72.12-72.14 MHz,
72.16-72.22 and 72.26-72.28 MHz.
A spokesman for the Commerce, Industry and Technology
Bureau said that RFID applications were gaining popularity
in global supply chain management systems. It was widely
adopted in the overseas and local logistics industry
for identifying and tracking product items.
"The exemption of RFID apparatus from licensing
obligation will facilitate the implementation of RFID
systems in Hong Kong, and will be propitious to the
development of the local logistics industry.
The relaxation of the licensing requirement will be
conducive to developing a more vibrant and thriving
telecommunications market, and will benefit both the
business community and consumers," the spokesman
said.
The Order will be tabled at the Legislative Council
on March 9. It will take effect as soon as possible,
subject to negative vetting of the Legislative Council.
