OFTA to Establish Database for Provision of Digital Terrestrial Television Services Coverage Information

The Office of the Telecommunications Authority (OFTA) announced today (31 December 2007) the availability of a database on coverage information about digital terrestrial television (DTT) services. The public can access such information on a residential building basis with effect from 15 January 2008.

"In view of the launch of DTT services from tonight, it is expected there will be an increasing number of enquiries on DTT coverage, in particular whether DTT signal is receivable at a specific location. For the convenience of the public, OFTA will launch in two weeks' time a service for the public to access the database on a residential building basis," a spokesperson of OFTA said.

"From 15 January 2008, members of the public will be able to key in the location or name of their buildings and get information about whether their buildings are covered by DTT services. If some buildings lie in grey areas where it is not clear whether DTT signals will be able to reach, OFTA will send staff to obtain on-site measurement before replying the enquiry," explained the spokesperson.

"Members of the public who wish to obtain such information prior to the availability of the above service or enquire about other aspects of DTT services are welcome to call OFTA's hotline at 2961 6333 during office hours. Special enquiry service is also available at 2389 8131 today and during the New Year holiday on 1 January 2008 (from 8 am to 12 am)," continued the spokesperson.

According to the implementation plan, DTT will be deployed in phases. The first phase of DTT services, the signals for which will be sent from the Temple Hill DTT transmitting station tonight, targets to cover the northern part of the Hong Kong Island, the Kowloon peninsula, part of Shatin and the eastern part of the Lautau Island.
